Editorial: Schools should teach MySpace, not ban it

Earlier this year, the House voted 410 to 15 to ban MySpace and other social networking and blogging sites from schools and libraries. The issue is awaiting a vote in the Senate.
An editorial in today's Boston Globe suggests that schools should be allowed to teach how to use this important technology instead of taking this head-in-the-sand approach.

MYSPACE is a cool way to express yourself, if you do that safely. My dad's okay with it, but here are the rules:
1. No giving out your address.
2. If someone asks for your ASL, say "teen, F, MO" that's all they need to know.
3. NEVER give out your real name on MYSPACE.
4. Privatise your MYSPACE profile.
5. If someone asks you to meet them, politely refuse, or block them.
6. If you are being harrassed, you're not being a wimp if you tell the owners of the site.
7. The less someone knows about you, the better.
These are the rules I have to follow, and I think if you teach students to be safe on MYSPACE, then they can have one.
