Do suspensions really punish students?
The Washington Post recently carried an article posing the age-old question "Does out-of-school suspension actually serve as a punishment or a reward to people who violate school rules?"
I'd say traditionaly id did punish the students because parents flipped out, and made this "vacation" a living hell either by work or some sort of further purnishment. On the other hand today, the students remain at home playing video games while the parents are too busy at work. This is jsut another one of those problems that wouldnt even arise if parents actually did some parenting
I believe supending students is just like giving them a brake.Other then that they cant make up their home work they miss and they have to take finals.its just not doing any good.
As for me, I think it's not really practical anymore.. These students need counselling and proper guidance, not punishments. I never got suspended before. But I know a couple of friends who actually enjoyed the moment they were suspended. So, it actually kill the purpose..
This is an excellent question. Most students who do things to become suspended don't want to be in school; so it rewards them. Also, back in the day, there was usually at least 1 parent home. Now, a suspended kid is usually home alone which equals those good ol ditching parties. I think there have to be other alternatives, like Saturday school, that would act as a deterrent & not a reward.
No suspensions dont punish kids because they do think that they look even cooler than before they do show off like one kid (no names) but he does it all the time and he gets kicked out and still does it!!!! its so annoying!!! he does distract us from getting a well learned by a well taught teacher!! thanks DISCO DOLL

To be deprived of a day being force fed opinions and provided a day for anything else....
Many years ago I was suspended a couple of times, each was a pleasure.
The one I enjoyed most was the suspension for cutting too many classes.

I think it does not because the kids get to say at home and some of the parents arent strick at all and let them do what they want.
